Monarch (2010)

Some thoughts about the Monarch butterfly - its transformation, migration, and incredibly brief life - added to an encaustic monotype held between wooden covers.

I search for you among the
flowers until, one day, I see you
perched atop a coneflower
quenching your thirst.

Your arduous journey from
caterpillar to butterfly is just
recently completed. Now only a few
weeks remain before you begin
your trek southward.

Do you know yet that you'll
be leaving? Do you feel the
shortness of time?

Or is it a sudden awareness - an
alarm clock embedded in your DNA
that signals the moment of departure?

Soon you'll be off, guided by a
mysterious knowledge that will take
you across thousands of miles to
the eucalyptus tree your grandfather knew.

Knowledge that will bring your
grandchildren back to the garden
where you were born.

Safe journey.
